DURANT, Okla. —

The Oklahoma State Health Department is preparing to test a beaver for rabies after it bit a small boy near Durant.

The incident happened on Saturday outside an apartment complex in Durant.Tammy Lane said her 5-year-old son went outside to get the family cat.

Instead of finding a feline, however, he was attacked by a beaver.

“I heard screaming. I went to see what was happening. His leg was pretty bad,” she said.

Lane said when her son tried to pet the beaver, it bit him.  She rushed him to a local hospital and called police.

“They didn’t believe it was a beaver. They thought it was a raccoon,” Lane said.

However, Lane’s boyfriend took a photo of the beaver after he beat it with a crowbar.

A Durant Police Department spokeswoman said this was the department’s first report of a beaver attack.

“We get our share of dog bites, cat bites. This is our first one for beavers,” said Lt. Carrie Wyrick.

Lane said the 60-pound beaver was bigger than her 42-pound son and could have easily carried him away. The animal bit a chunk out of the boy’s calf.

“My biggest worry is that he has rabies, and I don’t know. Nobody knows,” Lane said.

Health department officials said rabies in beavers is rare. Workers will test the beaver on Wednesday.

OK, now the first thing that comes to mind is, Don’t attempt to pet a beaver.  And no, i’m not going to go there, because that joke is just too easy.

Second thing that comes to mind is, “HOLY CRAP!  A 60 POUND BEAVER!”  I’ve had DOGS smaller than that sucker!  Now i’m sure that this was pretty terrifying for the child who got bit, and for the mother.  But I gotta love the Boyfriend’s reaction :

Well, i’ve gutted and replaced the old photo gallery, as it was also a PITA to work with. So take a look at the new gallery, and enjoy, as more pics will be loaded as they’re taken!

Well, I’ve been told that I don’t use the Tower that much.   This is untrue, as I use it for a lot of things, but I do admit, that my use of the front end of the website has been….lackluster… at best.

Well, there have been many reasons for this, and alot of it goes back to the content management system I was using over the past few years.  I’ve poked, prodded, hacked, beat, and been beaten by it.  It got to the point that I was not updating the site, because it was too much of a pain in the ass to update.

Oh, yeah, it would update the main page, AFTER I would force a date/time change on the shtml file containing the index.  Add to that archiving issues, and a whole list of headaches, it was just easier to not deal with it.

Well, with another year coming to an end, and having this poor site for 6 years now (scary that it’s been that long.), I have gone and revamped the whole site and basically gutted it, and installed a new content system that will hopefully encourage me to post more frequently.  Lord knows, I always have something to say.

So, enjoy the new site, and i’ll slowly work on getting some of the older posts from the old version put online again.
